Femoral Acetabular impingement, the topic of my last posts, characterized by boney changes into the femur and at the acetabulum ( that golf tee analogy comes in again) is not always an equal opportunity orthopaedic pathology
So who gets it more than others? An article from the Journal of Arthroscopic and related surgery helps shed the light. The following criteria were associated with greater risks:
1- Constant directional changes and cutting- think soccer type sports
2-Large amounts of flexion, adduction and internal rotation angles- think hockey players and football linemen
3-Large ranges of movement- think dance
Endurance and Flexibility sports seem to have less irritation overall. I am a bit mystified by my cycling friend who developed FAI- perhaps he's full of it.
