Snot

Several hours after I complete my bike ride to the clinic I feel the need to cough and blow my nose. Noting full well the COVID screens and the symptoms I don’t have, I do notice a slight tinge in the colour of snot. As a physiotherapy student we learn lots of about snot and the respiratory system in our cardiorespiratory units. You can learn a lot about the colour of snot- and today I slight darkened color tells me about the condition of air I’ve breathed in. The upper respiratory tract has a neat little system of hairs which help move foreign objects such as dust and smoke particles up and away from the gas exchanging tracts. This is important to help keep your lungs healthy and an early line of defence in protecting our airways. One of the many things I am thankful for today.
